Tijdens de installatie van WordPress kun je een voorvoegsel (prefix) kiezen voor je databasetabellen. Tijdens de installatie van WordPress, kies sterke inloggegevens (gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord) voor het beheerdersaccount. Gebruik geen standaardnamen zoals “admin” of “administrator” en zorg voor een complex wachtwoord.

Als je de XML-RPC-functionaliteit niet nodig hebt, schakel deze dan uit om potentiële aanvalspunten te minimaliseren. Jetpack, een veel gebruikte plugin in WordPress werkt echter met XML-RPC !  XML-RPC uitschakelen verstoort de werking van Jetpack.

Om XML-RPC volledig uit te schakelen, kun je de gratis Disable XML-RPC-API-plugin installeren. Of je kunt het uitschakelen met de premium perfmatters-plugin

Het is veruit het belangrijkste bestand van je website als het gaat om WordPress-beveiliging. Het bestand bevat database-inloginformatie en beveiligingssleutels die de encryptie van informatie in cookies afhandelen.
Het wp-config.php bestand bevindt zich standaard in de hoofdmap van je WordPress-installatie. Best is deze te verhuizen naar een map die www-ontoegankelijk is.

Hotlinking, ook wel bekend als “bandwidth theft” of “inline linking”, is een term die wordt gebruikt om te verwijzen naar het direct koppelen of insluiten van media-inhoud (zoals afbeeldingen, video’s, scripts, enz.) van de ene website op een andere website, zonder de toestemming van de eigenaar van de oorspronkelijke website. In feite gebruikt een andere website jouw bronnen om inhoud op hun eigen site weer te geven, waardoor ze jouw serverbandbreedte en bronnen verbruiken.

Een WordPress website beveiligen is dus van groot belang om te voorkomen dat deze kwetsbaar wordt voor hackers en kwaadwillende activiteiten.  Met de 22 punten hierboven genoemd maakt u de hackers toch een heel stuk moeilijker.
